Santa & Cole Moragas Table Lamp

Antoni de Moragas i Gallissà was a revolutionary designer in post-war Spain. In his industrial, furniture, and lighting design, he used the organicist architecture and Principles of Rationalism. This brought a cordiality in the relationship between form and use. He always thought in advance of the industrial process while designing the products. He felt – craftsmen based their models on intuition, and designers planned it based on reason. Now, his creations are considered timeless masterpieces.

In 1992, the Santa & Cole Moragas Table Lamp won the Nuevo Estilo Award.In 1957, Gallissà created the lamp for his own office. It has a large cylindrical base made of Sapele wood. On the top end, it balances three bulbs placed equiangular. The shade is of natural cotton ribbon(usually used for book-binding) and has silk thread detailing on the edges. The illumination emphasizes this asymmetrical pattern of the folds and stitches.

The lamp is part of Santa Cole’s Design Classics Collection. The highlight of the lamp lies in its indigenous design and thoughtful selection of raw materials. The Sapele wood has a natural golden to a brownish hue, which is a striking contrast to the color of the natural ribbon. The cotton ribbon is strong, durable, and can withstand heat and the test of time. This adaptation of organicist design emphasizes the connection between structure and well-being. Together, they make a minimalist design seem like a luxury.
