Santa & Cole Cesta Table Lamp

The Cesta is a collection of lamps that is part of Santa & Coles’ Design Classics Collection, a range of artifacts created during the Modernist period. The period was signified by designs that were not overly complicated or detailed but were simple elegant geometric shapes and lines. Miguel Milá, a Spanish designer, created the Santa & Cole Cesta Table Lamp in 1962. He was inspired by two objects, which together formed the basis of his design. One was the traditional lanterns in the Mediterranean that were hung in the coastal houses as signals to returning sailors, and commonly in terraces to light up the darkness. The other was an opal globe he found near a glass factory. Cesta, or the basket as in Spanish, was designed to hold this cherished object. Miguel Milá created a very modest design, representing the modernist style.

The lampshade is oval and made of Opal glass. It is placed inside a cherry wooden structure that reminds us of a basket. The wood is bent using a traditional steam bending process. It is an ecological and cost-effective technique, used less commonly now. The bent cherry wood is then gently polished and assembled as required. All this is done manually by European craftsmen. The light source is placed inside the glass structure. A dimmer is provided with the lamp. Santa & Cole Cesta Table Lamp symbolizes the warmth and well-being of the Mediterranean.The pure white opal and the soft light bring a serene feel to the atmosphere.
