Santa & Cole Americana Table Lamp

In the 1950s, George W. Hansen, an American interior designer, created a versatile swing arm table lamp. During World War II, while serving as an Army staff sergeant, he created a light using a length of copper wire attached to a wall, bent and wired to a bulb at the end. Later, when he set shop after the war, it became the swing arm lamp. The shaft had three sections with the middle section acting as the swivel.The upper section rotated, and it helped optimize the light in any direction required.

In 1964, Miguel Mila created the Santa & Cole Americana Table lamp, based on this model. Instead of three sections, Mila’s creation had only two sections with the upper section, acting as the swinging arm. Americana (things related to America) is a series of lamps – for table, lamp, and floor – that has the same adaptable design.

Santa & Cole Americana Table lamp has a sleek nickel shaft with a right-angle bend. The tip of the shaft acts as the swivel for the upper arm. The upper shaft rotates horizontally, towards or away from you, without moving the lower shaft and lamp base. The swinging arm ends in a conical white linen lampshade.
