Artek A201 Pendant was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1952 for the library of Saynatsalo Town Hall in central Finland. Alvar Aalto believed that the purpose of architecture is to ‘bring the material world into harmony with human life.‘
Composed of formed sheet steel, Pendant Light A201 possesses a sculptural presence; its beauty can be appreciated whether switched on or off. The light exiting the lower and upper part of the shade creates a beautiful halo, typical to Aalto who sought to make artificial light as indirect and soft as possible.
The Artek A201 is a sleek, stylish hanging lamp that consists of two steel cylinders and a perforated brass ring. The hanging lamp, designed by Alvar Aalto, reflects light through both the upper and lower parts of the lamp to create an effect comparable to sunlight - in addition to a warm glow, the lamp offers a downlight. The material used is lacquered steel, brass plated and polished steel. The colour of Artek A201 Pendant is brass or red-brass. The diameter of the lamp is 29.5cm and the height is 21cm. It is an elegant and playful lamp.
